ABU DHABI: UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Feb. 24, to discuss bilateral cooperation within the framework of the two countries’ strategic partnership. The leaders reviewed ties across multiple areas and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing relations, according to details released after the talks. The meeting took place during Lula’s working visit to the United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Mohamed and Lula reviewed the progress of UAE-Brazil cooperation, with a focus on economic, trade and development links. The discussions covered cooperation in advanced technology, space, renewable energy and sustainability, as well as food security, education and logistics. Officials said the two sides also addressed additional areas of mutual interest connected to sustainable development priorities in both countries, reflecting the breadth of the partnership.

The talks included an update on negotiations between the UAE and the Southern Common Market, known as Mercosur, aimed at establishing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership. Officials said the negotiations have reached their final stage. The meeting also included a review of the broader relationship between the UAE and Brazil and the sectors where both governments have been working to deepen engagement in recent years.

    Economic and sector priorities

Sheikh Mohamed noted that UAE-Brazil strategic relations span more than 50 years and have continued to strengthen, according to the readout of the meeting. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in line with shared priorities and long-term goals, including projects and policies linked to development and sustainability. The UAE and Brazil have been stepping up official exchanges and coordination on areas that intersect with trade, investment and technology, officials said.

Lula arrived in Abu Dhabi earlier on Tuesday and was received at the Presidential Flight by Sheikh Mohamed alongside a number of sheikhs, ministers and senior officials. The meeting between the two presidents was attended by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, as well as several ministers and senior officials. The delegation accompanying the Brazilian president also took part, officials said.

    Regional issues and diplomatic engagement

Beyond bilateral cooperation, the two leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern, according to the meeting summary. They discussed efforts connected to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East and globally. The readout said both sides shared a view on the importance of strengthening the foundations of international peace and security in the context of current challenges.

The Abu Dhabi discussions brought together two governments that have highlighted practical cooperation across economic and strategic sectors, with officials pointing to work spanning trade, development and technology. The meeting underscored the UAE’s engagement with major partners in Latin America and Brazil’s outreach to Gulf states through high-level visits and dialogue. The UAE and Brazil did not release details of specific agreements from the talks. – By Content Syndication Services.
